Welcome to the Ryedale Cycle Trail

Until 1965 the towns of Helmsley and Kirkbymoorside were connected by railway.

Since then the motorcar has dominated the scene and the busy A170 trunk road prevails

However, the route of the old railway persists, and provides us with a very suitable route to be developed into a cycle path for cyclists and pedestrians alike.

Our Aim

Initially our aim is for North Yorkshire County Council to commission the sustainability transport charity Sustrans to undertake a feasibility study into developing the route of the old railway line between Helmsley and Kirkbymoorside.

This will address landowners reservations and provide costings for the scheme.

The Helmsley to Nawton section is more intact and it is likely that this would form the first phase.
